Post-operative follow-up

The stimulation is activated a few weeks after the surgery.

The period for adjusting parameters is very important, and lasts for a few months. Neurologist sets the stimulation’s parameters with a programmer that communicates with the neurostimulator, through the skin. The strength of the stimulation is adapted until it reaches an optimal impact on the number of seizures.

A VNS Therapy ID card will be given to you. Make sure to always have it on you in order to prove that you have a medical devices implanted in your body.

The duration of the battery goes from 5 to 10 years, depending on the device and the settings. A short intervention is necessary to replace the generator when the battery runs out.

Risks and complications 

There are few risks associated with the surgery: hematomas and infection.

Risks associated with the material: electrode migration, malfunction, fracture, allergy, …

Risks associated with the stimulation: some undesirable side effects are possible: voice quivers (decreasing with time), tickling in the throat, coughs, and occasionally sleep apnea.
